Five principles for positive change and living your Authentic Self

A principle is a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning. The following are five principles that help make positive change and live your true authentic self.

Being curious means asking a lot of questions of others and of yourself. It opens door to explore more options, figure things out and get the answers that move us forward. Curiosity means having a strong desire to know or learn something. If you have stopped being curious you cannot explore yourself. Sometimes it may be scary to dig deep and ask those questions about things that have been lurking in the shadows of our subconscious.

Shining a bright light on the dark corners helps you see that you really didn’t have to be afraid. Shining light on your inner self gives you the power to make better choices to live your authentic self. When we get curious about ourselves, we get inspired to change.

As children we ask a lot of questions, usually WHY Is the one parents hear the most. Questions helps a child discover the world around them and how things work. This is the type of curiosity that is important to becoming aware of your thought patterns, your behaviour, and the best way you move through the world. Curiosity is the way that you can absorb knowledge. Without curiosity you cannot truly learn and grow.

Aligning with our authentic best self means that honesty is imperative. If you are lying to yourself about anything, including fears that have been living in those dark corners, you’re only putting up roadblocks on the path to your authentic self. Honesty is where wisdom begins, so let’s make the wise choices. Honesty and integrity are one in the same and about doing the right thing. Keeping secrets and avoiding things is not the way to align and connect with your authentic self. Secrets and shame can keep you from achieving positive outcomes in your life and will keep tripping you up on the journey.

Openness (Being teachable)

Choosing to be open enough to see the answers that have always been there but perhaps hidden away, takes us to a place of THRIVING rather than simply surviving. Sometimes, unless we are in grave danger, we tend to say in a SAEE place, we avoid change.

Openness is fundamental as we adjust to how we live our lives as an authentic self. Being open means being teachable. The more open you are the higher your likely hood to succeed. Stay open to the idea that you may not always have the right answer now but as you acquire new information you can add this to the answers you do have and do things better than you have been doing them so far.

Imagine if you had lived your whole life standing behind a wall never daring to step out from behind it and then one day a friend came and took you by the hand to the other side. Once there you saw a amazing sunrise for the very first time. Consider what your life might look like if you were open to all possibilities.

Willingness is the action step: being willing to stay in action not just in thought.

If you or know someone who has struggled with an addiction desperate to change in order to even survive, you understand their drive to do whatever it takes to make things better.

In order to live your authentic self, you must be ready and willing to go to any length to make it happen. There will be times you are out of your comfort zone, however, when you are willing to do what it takes you may find it is not as difficult as you thought.

“Life is a hell of a lot more fun if you say yes rather than no” by Sir Richard Branson.

Be willing to say yes and then follow through with action and you will not be disappointed.

The final principle for change and living your authentic self is focus. What does focus look like for you? Everyone has a unique way of staying focused. For me it is when I get rid of other distractions and think about the project at hand. I make a list of what needs to be taken care of to reach my objective, and as each step is complete, I check each one off my list. Some people find it easier to focus in a coffee shop or around people but for me it is preparing my environment to actively work on the project at hand and leave all other distractions at bay until I am finished.

Which ever works best for you to achieve the desired outcome, using these five principles - curiosity, openness, willingness, and focus, will help you find the answers and the solution towards living and being your true authentic self.
